DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:  Marching band is a performance-oriented class involving music development, marching, maneuvering, and outside performance.  Concert Band, also performance-oriented, allow students the opportunity to perform in a formal concert setting as well as in adjudicated concert, solo, and ensemble festivals. The class provides for the continued development of musical knowledge, understanding, and technical proficiency.  Marching and Concert band is a means of self-expression as well a source of aesthetic satisfaction for the child, school, and community.

OBJECTIVES AND/OR GOALS: To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the elements of music through performance in the band.

REQUIREMENTS: Each student is required to ATTEND ALL PRACTICES AND PERFORMANCES. ALL PERFORMANCES ARE CONSIDERED MAJOR TEST GRADES.  There is a band membership fee of $165.00 for participation in band for the year. The student is responsible for a properly maintained musical instrument. All music is to be returned in good condition upon request of the teacher. All music that is assigned to the student is to be practiced as homework.   Since much of the band student’s total grade is based on student participation, they will be required to write a one-page article review (assigned musical topic) per each excused absence.  All make-up work for grades is to be turned in to the director within 3 days per excused absence

RULES: Each student is required to bring a written excuse to the band director when the student has missed an after school rehearsal or performance. Failure to attend (without permission or approved excuse) will result in dismissal from the performance and possible dismissal from the program. Minor discipline problems with any student may result in assigned additional time following the next day’s rehearsal. There will be a uniform inspection before every performance. Uniforms must be clean and neat!! Violators will not perform and their grade will be lowered as per missing a performance.  Because of the high cost of sheet music, students will pay for damaged music if negligent or lost.  All other rules are in the Saks High School Handbook, Calhoun County Schools Code of Conduct and Saks Band Handbook.  All excuses n4eed to go directly through the band director and/or school attendance personnel.
