7th Grade Advanced Mathematics Syllabus

Course Description: The major focus of the Pre-Algebra curriculum is the integration of new and prior knowledge to solve problems dealing with all mathematical strands, with particular emphasis on algebra, geometry, and proportional reasoning. This curriculum offers a more in-depth study of algebraic concepts than in years past. Therefore, this course is subtitled Pre-Algebra. Students who successfully complete the eighth-grade have a thorough knowledge of the skills and concepts necessary for the study of Algebra I.  Students will begin building the foundation for high school courses.

Textbook: Holt McDougal Mathematics Grade 8

Grading Policy:             Class work/Homework:                               5-50 points each

                                            Tests:                                         100 points each

                                            Final Exam (Comprehensive):                 10% of final grade

                                            Other (Group work, quizzes, etc.):            Determined by the teacher

7th Grade Math Needs:                                                                 

  • 3-ring binder (1 in. or larger)    

  • Loose-leaf paper (3 packs)                                         

  • 1 pack of graph paper                                                                 

  • Pencils (NO PENS!)                                                      

Optional Supplies:                                                                          

  • Scientific calculator (Texas Instruments preferred) 

  • Highlighters (multi-colored)

  • 1 box of Colored Pencils

  • 1 box of Kleenex (donation for classroom use)

  • 1 pack of pencils (donation for classroom use)

  • 1 pack of notebook paper (donation for classroom use) 

Teacher Expectations:

  1. Be prepared for class!  Bring all supplies with you to class EVERY DAY!

  2. You MUST use a PENCIL in my class.

  3. Be on time for class! If you are not seated and quiet when the tardy bell finishes ringing, then you will be counted tardy.  

  4. You will have homework almost every night.  I will check it often.  If you need help, I am available before school (around 7:15 a.m.).  We also offer after-school tutoring, if needed. 

  5. Everyone will keep a notebook.  Keep your notebook organized daily.  LABEL ALL OF YOUR NOTES AND PAPERS (name, date, page number, problems, etc.).  

  6. Write down all “Quotes of the Week” in your notebook.  They could be counted as bonus points at the end of the semester.

  7. Problem of the Day sheets will be taken up each month for a grade.

  8. You must have a technology contract on file in order to use a computer or other device at school.  

  9. Do not go through my desk or personal items without permission.  

  10. If you miss any of my class, whether tardy or absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see me for the notes and work that you missed.  If you have an excused absence, you must make up the work that was missed within 3 days of the absence.  Make-up tests will not be given during class time.

  11. If you have an unexcused absence, then you will receive a 0 on any missed work. This does include tests.

  12. Do not leave any personal items in my classroom.  This includes textbooks and notebooks, etc.

  13. NO CHEATING!  There is a difference in helping and cheating. Everyone involved will receive a zero and parents will be contacted.  

  14. Progress Reports will be sent out if you have a C or below during the nine weeks.  This MUST be signed by a parent and returned the next day.  

  15. You MAY be given bathroom/locker passes at the beginning of the semester.  However, each excessive visit to the restroom during class will be counted as a tardy.

Course Content:

The student will be able to:

1.  Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.

2.  Work with radicals and integer exponents.

3.  Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.

4.  Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.

5.  Define, evaluate, and compare functions.

6.  Use functions to model relationships between quantities.

7.  Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.

8.  Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

9.  Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

10.  Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

**This course syllabus is to be signed by student and parent and returned to the teacher within two school days. The student should then retain this page in his/her notebook throughout the semester for student and parent referral. Requirements of course are subject to change.
